McDonald's and Starbucks , two of the biggest U.S. restaurant companies, both said the Israel-Hamas war hurt their sales at the end of last year. Shares of McDonald's fell 4% in morning trading Monday, several hours after it reported that a sales slowdown in the Middle East contributed to its fourth-quarter revenue miss. Investors should be cautious on Starbucks stock, according to TD Cowen. Starbucks stock has slipped more than 2% from the start of the year and was off 1.45% in premarket trading Tuesday. SBUX YTD mountain Starbucks stock has pulled back 2.4% from the start of 2023. Charles also noted U.S. headwinds associated with slower month-over-month non-farm payroll increases, which could be reflected in Starbucks' morning business. "Starbucks' morning-oriented business tracks changes in payrolls as changes in the number of commuters naturally impacts morning routines," Charles said.

From drive-thru to back-of-house operations to predictive ordering for consumers, restaurant brands are starting to pilot artificial intelligence to streamline food service. McDonald's , for its part, sold McD Tech Labs to IBM in 2021, entering a strategic partnership to help bring AI technology to drive-thru lanes. Olive Garden owner Darden Restaurants is betting on fine dining with its $715 million acquisition of Ruth's Chris Steak House . The average check at Ruth's Chris is $97, according to Darden's investor presentation. For comparison, the average check at Olive Garden, which accounts for roughly half of Darden's revenue, was $21 in fiscal 2022. Still, Darden executives emphasized that the Ruth's Chris acquisition is a long-term bet, and the decision wasn't made based on the current economic cycle. Cardenas also said third-party data shows that there is little overlap between Ruth's Chris customers and those who frequent The Capital Grill and Eddie V's.

The restaurant industry was already struggling with a labor crunch before the pandemic turned the problem into a full-blown crisis . More than half of U.S. states will hike their minimum wage this year , but some restaurant workers could see even bigger gains in 2023. If California's government has its way, average hourly pay for restaurant workers could soar in 2023. And it's unlikely that restaurant workers will see any wage gains on the federal level this year. President Joe Biden has expressed support for a $15-an-hour minimum wage and the elimination of the tipped wage, which allows employers to pay workers as little as $2.13 an hour.
At the same time, many employers are looking for workers, with job openings well above the number of job seekers. That leaves some finance chiefs scouting for savings that don’t involve job cuts, or that supplement layoffs, advisers and analysts said. Other ways to cut costs include exiting leases, reducing the number of suppliers, automating tasks, trimming software spending and finding less expensive components, advisers said. Many companies over the past year have raised prices to keep up with escalating input costs, in addition to trimming expenses. Still, the company’s restaurant-level profit margin during the quarter ended Oct. 2 fell to 16.2% from 20.1% a year earlier.

The chicken chain has launched its first-ever online store, and it’s filled with quirky merchandise that pays homage to cult-favorite items. Chick-fil-A said it expects the products, which range from $15 to $75, to “sell out quickly” — and the chain is already planning for more merchandise next year. Chick-fil-A is selling merchandise for the first-time ever. “Our studies show that one-third of consumers in the 18-44 age range are likely to buy products from collaborations,” Jensen told CNN Business earlier this year.
The food-tech startup Sauce allows restaurants to use dynamic pricing to raise delivery prices. Piada, a fast-casual restaurant chain, is testing dynamic pricing using the tech startup Sauce. Novak, whose VC firm Rackhouse invested in Sauce last year, said price-lowering features are often overlooked when discussing dynamic pricing. Sherri Kimes, a professor emeritus at Cornell's Hotel School, echoed Novak, saying dynamic pricing can give consumers "some control" over how they spend their money. For restaurants, dynamic pricing is still worth a shot.
